In 2021 GLS acquired the assets of Living Quarters Technology. Some of these assets included these USCG/ABS A-60 Blast Resistant modules constructed of aluminum. These modules are designed and engineered with a certified, safe and lightweight exterior wall design for use on deep-water structures, marine vessels, and other floating structures. The design can be used to build USCG certified accommodations, MCC’s, offices, and other manned structures of all sizes. Buildings constructed using this design are:
The USCG/ABS building is nearly 2/3 the weight of conventional steel buildings, which provides an advantage when loading, unloading and transporting the building to site. It also helps meet safety and platform limitations.
- 12 Man Sleeper Building (Aluminum) 12’0″ x 40’0″ weight - 35,500 lbs. – Blast rated .25 bar.
- 12 Man Sleeper Building (Steel) 12’0″ x 40’0″ weight - 48,000 lbs.
Aluminum structures have much lower maintenance costs and 2 to 3 times longer life cycles than traditional structures. Buildings are constructed out of aluminum, which does not require a marine coating. Building exteriors are crimped plate aluminum which does not corrode in salt laden environments, unlike steel structures which eventually develop rusting and leakage.
Our buildings are engineered to withstand blasts from 0.1 bar to 1. 5 bars. The unique design features two completely separate walls, with no interconnecting parts. The exterior wall serves as a blast wall and remains structurally sound, even when subjected to an 8 psi free-field blast load with 200 msec duration.
The new dual wall design incorporates a 2” thick layer of either cellulose or ceramic type A-60 insulation blanketing. This offers protection from open flames and improves energy efficiency on the heating/cooling of the buildings.
The aluminum buildings reduces sound decibels by as much as 40% when compared to conventionally designed structures.
Interior components are all state of the art fire safe, comfortable and USCG approved. Our buildings feature oversize mattresses along with comfort quiet curtains for privacy. Buildings also feature oversized HVAC capacity cooling in extreme environments. All the latest safety features are incorporated in the unit; including fire and gas detection smoke detection, and emergency lighting that maintains full lighting throughout the building in case of power loss.
Although the initial cost of aluminum is a little higher than raw steel, aluminum modules are non-corrosive and hence require little-to-no maintenance and feature better insulation properties. Lower amortized maintenance costs make these units a better overall value than conventional modules.
